Wheel of Life Coaching: How equestrian can set priorities according to what's most important
Often used by professional life coaches, the "Wheel of Life" exercise helps you consider each area of your life in turn...
...and it helps you identify the areas in your life apart from horses and riding that you may have neglected due to pressure from other sources.
I do it with nearly all my clients; it gives them new perspective and reminds them of goals(horse-related or otherwise) they may have forgotten about.
How to draw your own Wheel of Life
A Wheel of life is a simple diagram consisting of a wheel/circle with eight spokes. Each spoke represents an important area of your life.
Start by brainstorming the 6 to 8 areas of your life that are important for you.
Different approaches to this are:
The roles you play in life for example: husband/wife, father/mother, manager, colleague, team member, horse rider/owner, community leader, or friend;
Areas of life that are important to you for example: artistic expression, positive attitude, career, education, significant other, family, friends, financial freedom, horse riding/competing, recreation, or public service; personal growth or
Your own combination of these (or different) subjects, reflecting the aspects that are your priorities in your life.
Here is an example to give you an idea of how it works:

Write down these areas on the Wheel of Life diagram, one on each spoke of the life wheel.
The wheel of life coaching -approach assumes that you will be satisfied and fulfilled if you can find the right balance of time and attention to devote to each of these areas, at any specific moment in your life.
Decide how much time and attention you’re currently devoting to each area. On a scale of 0 (low/middle of circle) to 5 (high/outer edge of circle), mark each score on the appropriate spoke of you Life Wheel. Use the template below:
Now join up the marks around the circle. Does you life wheel looked and feel balanced? Would it roll smoothly over uneven ground?
In an ideal world...
How much time would you LIKE to devote to each area of your life?
In an ideal world? Inevitably you will need to make choices and compromises, as your time and energy is limited!
Plot the “ideal” scores around your life wheel too.
Now you have a visual representation of your current life balance...
...and your ideal life balance.
Where are the greatest discrepancies? These are the areas of your life that need urgent attention.
There are almost certainly areas that are not getting as much attention as you’d like.
But there may also be areas where you’re putting in more effort than you’d really like or have time for. These areas are sapping your energy and dampening your enthusiasm.
Identify the areas that need attention. Set some SMART goals and work out a realistic action plan to regain balance.
Starting with the neglected areas, what do you need to do to redress the balance?
In the areas that currently drain your energy and resources, what can you do to regain control? Prioritise? or delegate?
