Re gaining Confidence Horseback Riding....with extraordinary new e-manual
Recent equestrian accident? Re gaining confidence horseback riding sound like an impossible dream? Nightmares resembling the Christopher Reeves horse riding accident haunting you? Was your riding confidence shattered in a million pieces when you least expected it? Or was it worn down gradually over many weeks until it has now become more or less invisible? Or did you wake up one morning and found that, on the way to the show your confidence had completely disappeared never to reappear again?
Horse riders get scared for various reasons You may have been hacking out perfectly confidently all your life, but you've had a recent equestrian accident that left you injured physically, emotionally or both. Or you may be an accomplished rider but you cannot handle the stress and fear of failing when competing. Or maybe you are a beginner, and the whole size-of-the-horse, distance-to-the-ground-thing is causing you panic-attacks. Or maybe your age or health leaves you doubting your riding abilities. Or you were forced to accept that as we get older we just don't recuperate as well or as fast as when we were younger, so an accident can have more lasting repercussions. You may have become afraid to handle your horse at all.
You are not alone.
I know exactly how you feel; nervous, worried, terrified, frustrated, helpless, useless and depressed. Been there, done that. It took me weeks to get back in the saddle after a nasty fall and I spend months re gaining confidence horseback riding. While searching desperately and impatiently for solutions, I discovered several tremendously effective mental strategies that got me confidently back into the saddle in no time at all.

Loss of Confidence
There are few more debilitating experiences for equestrians than a loss of confidence. Your horse may be a grand champion, you may be an excellent, world-class rider, but if you've lost your confidence all these things are perfectly meaningless. Nothing destroys self-confidence as effectively as fear, whether grounded in reality or not. Feeling nervous or even terrified when riding is nothing to be ashamed of: riding is a risky sport. 26 out of 100,000 equestrian accidents will result in serious injury (according to a survey in Horse & Rider magazine, November 1999). Although this may be quite a small percentage, a significant number out of the 26 cases will unfortunately result in death. But excessive anxiety can be paralysing and humiliating and does need to be addressed ASAP.
Two living creatures
Since equestrian activities involve two living creatures, horse and rider, lack of confidence from one greatly influences the confidence of the other. For example: The horse sees something he cannot identify in the woods and raises his head, wide-eyed. The rider shortens the reins and tenses in the saddle, and pulls the horse up. The horse feels this uneasiness through the saddle and assumes that his rider is alarmed too. His fear then feeds off the rider's uncertainty, and he tosses his head nervously and pulls on the reins, causing more fear in the rider ... and so the cycle repeats itself.

One thing I have learnt is definitely non-negotiable... Whatever it is that you want to achieve with your horse and your riding, there is one fundamental concept you have to accept in all its complexity:
You have to exercise you mind with as much diligence as you exercise your body.
First of all you have to clear the deck: you have to get rid of the fear and frustration that has been accumulating over days, weeks and months.
