Equestrian Riding Apparel for every Occasion
What to wear or not to wear...
When you visualise yourself galloping across the plains on your horse with the wind blowing through your hair - are you also bare foot and hatless? Although equestrian riding apparel may not be quite as comfortable as going barefoot and hatless, it has been designed to keep riders safe so that they can continue to enjoy those exhilaratinging gallops until deep into their golden years.
When you are around horses, weather you prefer the English or Western style, you should always wear boots. You should wear boots when you are feeding and grooming your horse too, because when one of those hooves is placed on top of your toes on open sandals or sneakers it can really hurt, and for a long time. Cowboy boots as a rule can be quite comfortable, but English riding boots can be rather stiff to walk in, especially if they are full-lenght. Get yourself some paddock or barn boots, or even hiking books to use for mucking out etc.
I don't know many people who actually enjoy wearing riding helmets, especially on a boiling hot summer's day. After all, they are not the most stylish accessories. However, falling from a horse slap-bang on top of your head without any protection whatsoever can be fatal. If you ride Western style, your cowboy hat will not provide you with the proper protection if you are thrown. Wear a vented riding helmet to protect your skull (and more importantly, your brain).
When you are competing, leave your blue jeans or khakis and T-shirts at home. Western wear is usually quite comfortable, but English attire is designed more for looks than comfort.
If you are riding in a show that requires hunting attire, you will need a white or pinstriped riding shirt, riding breeches, a formal woollen riding jacket, a hunt cap or riding helmet and dress equestrian riding boots. Wear riding gloves.
Dressage riding competition gear is very formal. Wear a pristine white shirt, a stock tie, white or tan breeches, a black jacket, black dress boots and riding hat or helmet. The stock tie is fastened with a pin that has a horse theme. For saddle seat competitions, you will want to find a white riding shirt, dark jodhpurs, a dark coat, jodhpur boots and a riding derby.
Male and female Western show riders wear different clothing. Men wear Western shirts, ties, leather belts with ornate silver buckles, riding boots and felt cowboy hats. They also need a nice pair of jeans and fancy chaps. Women need to shop for Western tuxedo shirts, jackets or vests, bow ties, jeans, chaps, riding boots and felt hats.
