Reading in the Tackroom - Book Club Equestrian

2008 is National Reading Year!

The perfect moment to start a new online reading group for horse lovers. Or is it a book club equestrian?

Reading is to the mind, what exercise is to the body. As by the one, health is preserved, strengthened, and invigorated: by the other, virtue (which is the health of the mind) is kept alive, cherished, and confirmed. Joseph Addison

WHAT EXACTLY IS AN EQUESTRIAN READING GROUP?

Anyone who meets to discuss horse books with other horse people is part of an equestrian reading group. Being a member can help you as a reader and rider get more pleasure out of your reading (and riding!). You can share your love of horses, books and reading with like-minded people but also learn an enormous amount through other people's interpretation of a book and the stimulating discussion that follows.

It is a great way for horse and book lovers to come together and enjoy each other's company. It's also a great way to meet new friends and like-minded people. And it all happens online, so no worrying about attending a meeting at a specific time. You join the discussion and post your opinion at any time it suits you, and read other members' contributions.

In science, read, by preference, the newest works; in literature, the oldest. The classic literature is always modern. - Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, first Baron Lytton

This could easily be the Reading in the Tack Room's credo. We read equestrian books that discuss the newest discoveries, but we also read the classical masters. We are currently reading and discussing the greek philosopher and master horse trainer Xenophon, that lived 300 BC, and who many experts consider the father of modern dressage.

Regretfully he cannot join the conversation, I am sure he would have adored discussing his ideas with horsemen and -women from all over the world. And would he not have been impressed with e-books!

*New technology has made e-book screens as easy to read as their traditional counterparts. Browsing, buying, and downloading e-books is fast, easy, and inexpensive.

*An e-book allows its user to change any book to large type or to various fonts, making reading more pleasurable for those with eye-strain or those who like to read while working out on the treadmill or stationary bike.

*E-books are frequently lower-priced than their traditional counterparts. Many titles on the Kindle, for example, are available for $9.99.

*In an e-book you can make notes in the text, highlight and clip key passages, and bookmark pages while you are reading, just as they do in the margins of a book. But unlike a book, you can also export your notes.

AND WHAT IS AN EQUESTRIAN BOOK CLUB?

The first time I read an excellent book, it is to me just as if I had gained a new friend. When I read a book over I have perused before, it resembles the meeting with an old one. Oliver Goldsmith

It seems that most people think of a book club as an activity that involves buying a number of books of your own choice every month. Reading in the Tack Room in not a traditional book club equestrian in that sense. You can buy horse books, daily, weekly or monthly, in traditional or e-book form, but you are under no obligation.

The members of the reading group receive the e-books that we are reading at the moment FREE when they join the reading group.

Reading in the Tack Room is a reading group with all the benefits but none of the hassles of a book club built in.
