What are the biggest causes of stress for Equestrians?

The factors that contribute to the experience of stress are many and varied. Furthermore, the causes of stress are highly individual. What you consider stressful depends on many factors, including your personality, general outlook on life, problem-solving abilities, and social support system. Something that's stressful to you may be neutral or even enjoyable to someone else.

The biggest causes of stress can be roughly divided into six different main fields:

1. Physical and Mental Health

Lack of fitness

Unhealthy diet

Addictions: drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, chocolate

Acute or chronic disease

Changes in body functions, such as pregnancy, puberty, menopause, or ageing.

Internal frustrations such as physical handicaps, the lack of a desired ability or trait, and other real or perceived personal limitations.

2. Social an Circumstancial Stress

Change of social circumstances (eg: bereavement of spouse/parent/child, moving house, changing jobs, marriage, holidays etc)

Pressure to conform to social or employment patterns of behaviour, especially where these behaviours are not the preferred behaviours of the individual.

Conflict in relationships, or an absence of praise and being valued by others.

Lack of support, no time for relaxation.

Having a high-pressure job, being unemployed, financial pressure.

Job conflicts, ex. when a working mother feels torn over a job offer that would advance her career, but take time away from her family.

3. Cognitive and Emotional Pressure

Childhood experiences influence our behaviour today. If we did not develop mature coping strategies as we grew up, we can find ourselves unable to cope with the demands of adult life.

Inner conflicts that have not been addressed (Neglected Inner Child).

Encountering situations that evoke stressful feelings that were experienced in childhood.

Lack of self-awareness. Increasing self awareness.

4. Conflicting Values and Beliefs

All experiences and events can be interpreted in many different ways, influencing the level of stress that we feel:

Perceiving the consequences of actions as being dangerous or threatening. These perceptions may or may not be accurate.

Having an inaccurate conception of self.

Perfectionism: believing one is capable of achieving more than one's strengths and weaknesses will allow - setting standards and expectations too high.You may feel pressure to excel at work, make a difference in your community, or be the perfect mother.

Misinterpreting and misunderstanding the actions of others.

Not having the skill or knowledge to cope with challenging situations: absence of a rational approach to problem-solving, or conflict resolution.

5. Current Life Circumstances

What are you experiencing at this point in time?How are you, personally, reacting to it and interpreting it?

Too many simultaneous demands from different people.

Environmental stresses, such as noise, cramped conditions, or cluttered surroundings.

Needs that are being unmet or frustrated.

The appearance of a threat to survival, self-esteem, or identity.

Change in eating, sleeping, working patterns. Change of time zone, relationship change etc.

6. Spiritual Causes of Stress

Violation of personal or religious moral code.

Lack of spiritual advancement.

Absence of a relationship with a higher being.
